Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a barred spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +9 degrees.  It spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 45,000 light years.

This galaxy has a fascinating structure.  The core extends for a length along the center of the bar and has blue highlights on the edges of the white core.  The bar is unusually long, extending almost the complete width of the disk.  “Baby arms" start at each end of the bar but quickly terminate in the diffuse outer disk.
